Many states of the world have long traditions of the volunteer firefighters. In Germany the first volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1811. In the United States Benjamin Franklin and four friends founded the first volunteer fire department in Philadelphia in 1736. The first President of the United States George Washington served as volunteer firefighter too.
The written sources state that the first fellowships of the volunteer firefighters in Lithuania were founded in the second half of the XIX c. While actively operating in Lithuania during the interwar period, during the period of the occupation by the Soviet Union they were disbanded and reorganised. And only from the year 2016 the provisions of the amendment of the law on the fire protection that regulate the creation of the formations of the volunteer firefighters came into the effect.
Today on the initiative of the active citizens of Lithuania, who take care of the safety of their own and their community, contribute to the development, change and preservation of the life of the community, the first formations of volunteer firefighters are being created. These volunteers work on the voluntary grounds, without remuneration and guided by the motives of the public spirit and community. Being the volunteer firefighters means the forgetting of the question – why do I need that; my safety is ensured by the state; disasters, fires and other hazards will always pass me by, etc., – and direct contribution to the safety of all of us, to save the lives of the victims.
The objective of the volunteer firefighters is to help to the others, seek the public benefit, without expecting the remuneration for that. The volunteers base their action on the belief that by helping others you feel happy yourself.
